Watch: New Tackle Laws Result In Questionable Penalty Try For Scarlets Against Ulster

The Scarlets fought back to secure a 16-13 win over Ulster tonight thanks to a controversial penalty try as a result of World Rugby’s new tackle laws.

The new laws resulted in men in the bin for both sides, but the talking point of the night surrounded a second-half penalty try awarded to the Scarlets.

Jacob Stockdale sliced through some weak Scarlets defending to help build a 13-6 half-time lead for the visitors. The Welsh side however fight back to lead 16-13 as a result of the questionable try.

Players making contact with an opponent’s head in “reckless tackles” now receive at least a yellow card, and so it proved for Ulster’s Sean Reidy who was sent to the bin.

The number eight thought he had denied Scarlets scrumhalf Aled Davies a score with a tackle on the try line, but because it was deemed high, referee Marius Mitrea not only sent him to the sinbin, but awarded the hosts a penalty try.

Scarlets second row Jake Ball was also yellow carded for a high tackle two minutes later, prompting a period of pressure from Ulster.

But Scarlets stood firm to secure a ninth win from 10 Pro12 fixtures.
