Shattered.
Ireland’s Olympic dreams were shattered this evening following some questionable officiating that helped Fiji secure their place in the semi-finals.
The men in green were led for much of the contest, scoring three tries through Zac Ward and Chay Mullins (2) before a late comeback from the reigning champions ended their hopes of medaling
One of their scores, however, has set social media alight, with clear evidence showing that their second try came courtesy of a blatant knock from the kick-off.
The Irish players could be seen protesting the crucial score that changed the game – but it wasn’t even checked by the match officials. Heartbreaking stuff for Ireland and simply not good enough for Olympic level.
Clear knock on from Fiji that leads directly to the winning try over the heart broken Ireland team. How was this not checked by the TMO in an Olympic quarter final? If the TMO isn’t allowed to check it’s even more ludicrous pic.twitter.com/SIa4Gy1Dok
