Serious drive.
One of the reasons Jared Payne was brought on tour with the Lions this summer was his versatility. The Ulsterman can play almost anywhere across the backline, and having played plenty of Super Rugby, brings some much needed experience with him.
Gatland has used him in the centre and at fullback so far, but probably didn’t expect to deploy him in the back-row against the Chiefs on Tuesday. With Joe Marler in the sinbin, and Haskell off the pitch to make way for a prop, Payne slotted in at flanker for a scrum.
While much of the credit of course goes to the front-row, Payne should some serious power and determination to help drive the Lions on to win a penalty. Who said backs can’t scrum?
