England star Elliot Daly has been red-carded for a dangerous challenge on Argentina’s Leonardo Senatore.
The Wasps star attempted to take a high-ball as Senatore was in the air, resulting in the number eight landing heavily on his neck and head, giving referee Pascal Gauzere no option but to show him red.
Referee’s have been instructed in recent weeks to clamp down on any challenges that result in a player’s head or neck being at any risk including tackles, challenges in the air and neck-rolls.
Ireland’s game with New Zealand was marred in controversy last week when Sam Cane escaped punishment for a dangerous tackle on Robbie Henshaw. At the time and since it was stated that the challenge was accidental, hence why the All Blacks flanker wasn’t punished.
In this instance once again, there was clearly no intent from Daly but the referee judged that he was responsible, resulting in a red card.
We feel for Daly, but you have to concede it was excellent refereeing by Gauzere.
