Chris Ashton was asked to analyse his eye-gouge on Luke Marshall which saw him handed a 10-week ban and his excuse was ridiculous.
Perhaps the ban may have been a little harsh but theres no doubt the incident in question was completely reckless. Ashton clearly endangered Luke Marshall in the Champions Cup tie as he pulled him to the ground by his face, making contact with his eyes in the process.
Ashton claimed that he was shocked at the length of the punishment for what he reckoned was an accident, and explained that the incident happened so quick that he didn’t know he was pulling Marshall down by his face.
It’s too fast, in my eyes, to even realise you’ve got someone by the face.
.@ChrisAshton1 “shocked” by 10-week ban for eye-gouging that ruled him out of @EnglandRugby‘s #RBS6Nations squad. https://t.co/layiyl3Yd1
