“It is these small little cheats that can be the difference.”
Former internationals Stephen Ferris, Brian O’Driscoll and Ben Kay treated us to a little masterclass in how to be effective and efficient at the breakdown ahead of Ulster’s clash with Harlequins last night.
Despite the fact that he was an outside centre, O’Driscoll’s ability at the breakdown is something he became known for in rugby, with the former Ireland captain almost operating like an extra back-row at times.
Ferris and Kay, both being forwards, were also excellent breakdown specialists, and the tutorial from all three of them last night is well worth a watch.
O’Driscoll highlights Ireland’s clever use of a second man to support his teammate who is trying to recover the ball, while Ferris and Kay discuss body shape, and the need to target the ball, not the man.
Check it out below.
