Warren Gatland has said on numerous occasions that being tour captain does not guarantee you a spot in the Test team.
That being said, Sam Warburton’s chances of leading the Lions out in the first Test are starting to look increasingly unlikely. The Welsh star made his return against the Provincial Barbarians, but looked way off the mark.
To make matters worse he picked up an ankle problem in that game and didn’t feature against the Blues. He was ruled out of tomorrow’s game with the Crusaders earlier in the week.
Warburton has very little rugby under his belt in the last couple of months and with just three games remaining, it’s hard to see him being match-fit for the All Blacks.
Realistically Warburton only has two games left to prove his fitness, with the final game taking place in the middle of a Test week. Gatland may be forced to start looking at other possible captains.
