British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland has praised Jared Payne and Rob Henshaw after selecting the Ireland duo in the team to face the Blues on Wednesday.
Payne, who has recovered from a calf strain, gets a start at 13 against his former team at Eden Park, with Henshaw inside him at 12. Lions coach Warren Gatland is delighted the New Zealand born star is fit and ready to face his old side.
“One of the reasons Jared Payne was picked on this tour is because of his experience and his experience in New Zealand.” Gatland said.
“He’s obviously been involved with the Blues and the fact that he’s played in a lot of big games where Ireland have won. He’s been one of the key components of their success and I think Robbie Henshaw as a player has been outstanding in the last year or two.”
“He’s a quality player [Henshaw] and he’s more than someone who can just get across the gainline. He’s got some real skill and ability and we want to see that on Wednesday night.”
The Lions take on the Blues on Wednesday with an 8.35am kick-off.
