Wales Set To Name New Captain Ahead Of The Six Nations

It was revealed last week that Sam Warburton was considering stepping down as Wales captain.

The former British & Irish Lions captain has led his country since 2011, but has seen a real drop in form in recent months, while also struggling with a number of injuries. He has reportedly asked to be relieved of his duties as captain as a result and this now looks set to be confirmed.

The likes of Chris Robshaw and Jamie Heaslip have benefitted hugely in recent years by relinquishing their captaincy’s to focus on their own individual game, and Warburton looks set to be the latest to try out this proven formula.

As a result Alun-Wyn Jones will be handed the chance to prove his captaincy credentials for the British and Irish Lions tour this summer by taking over from Sam Warburton as Wales skipper.

Warburton’s jersey is under threat from Justin Tipuric, his long-standing No 7 rival, and the 28-year-old is said to be wary of the public perception that he is picked solely on reputation and previous merits.

Having won his 100th cap in 2016, Jones is set to formally take over the leadership duties next Tuesday when Rob Howley announces his Six Nations squad.

Jones, 31, is front-runner, along with Ireland hooker Rory Best, to lead the Lions in New Zealand in June under Warren Gatland.
