Another dead end.
Connacht’s search for a new head coach continues to frustrate, with another candidate after ruling himself out of the running. Pat Lam is set to leave the western province at the end of the season, but a replacement has yet to be found.
A number of high-profile coaches in recent weeks have decided they’re not interested, with their wish list wearing thin. Tony Brown, head coach of Super Rugby side the Highlanders ruled himself out last week as have the likes of Clermont’s Jonno Gibbes and Nigel Carolan, the Ireland U20s head coach.
Now, Franco Smith, head coach of Super Rugby side the Cheetahs, has revealed that he has also turned down an approach from Connacht.
The 44-year-old told South Africa outlet Netwerk24:
It’s true that I was contacted by Connacht in December, but I told them that I am committed to the Cheetahs.
