Melbourne Rebels star Amanaki Mafi was arrested over the weekend and will face charges of assault after an incident with teammate Lopeti Timani in New Zealand, Rugby Australia has confirmed.
The altercation occurred following the Rebels’s 43-37 loss to the Highlanders in their Super Rugby fixture in Dunedin on Saturday.
“Rugby Australia and the Melbourne Rebels are aware of an incident involving Rebels players Amanaki Mafi and Lopeti Timani in Dunedin overnight,” RA said in a statement.
“Both players remain in New Zealand with Mafi currently in police custody following an altercation between the two players.”
Timani received “moderate injuries” but did not go to hospital. The statement added that no other players were involved in the incident.
Rebels chief executive Baden Stephenson stated:
“I am bitterly disappointed that an incident has occurred at the end of a season where we have taken pride in our on and off-field behaviour.
“We will respect the process and won’t be making further comments until all investigations have taken place.”
