Wales and Lions legend Shane Williams made a shock return to rugby this past weekend as he came out of retirement to play for his beloved Amman United.
The former world player of the year stunned spectators as he took the field for his home town side in the National League 3 West B match against Burry Port. Williams lined up on the wing nearly five years after retiring from the international scene.
He played his last game of an illustrious career for the Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars in Japan in February 2015, nearly three years after finishing with the Ospreys in 2012.
In his South Wales Evening Post column, Williams said:
“The boys at my local club Amman United had been badgering me for some time to have a game for them, so I took the plunge and turned out against Burry Port.
“How did I feel afterwards? Put it this way – I have since been walking around like John Wayne and feeling as if I got kicked by a horse.
“For anyone in any doubt, no, I haven’t felt at my best.
“With hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have agreed to the run-out just six days after completing the Ironman Wales event. My legs were still feeling like jelly and there were aches in muscles that I didn’t know I even had.
“But despite all that, I enjoyed the experience against Burry Port.” [WalesOnline]
