Let’s put on a show.
Head coach Joe Schmidt wants Ireland to put on a show this weekend agains the Springboks ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023 vote next Wednesday.
The World Rugby council will sit down and vote on who will host rugby’s showpiece event in 2023 with Ireland and their opponents this weekend among those in contention.
South Africa are favourites to be handed the event, after being recommended in World Rugby’s technical review. But Schmidt reckons Ireland still have a great chance, and wants his team to put in a great performance this weekend.
‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could put in a really good performance and put them [the IRFU] in the shop window when people are making their votes next Wednesday. It would be fantastic,’ Schmidt said.
‘If we got a World Cup here, people would have an unbelievable time.
‘They would fully embrace the tournament, but they would be fully embraced by the Irish people which is an opportunity to have a unique experience. It would be unfortunate if people did miss it.’
Ireland take on the Springboks tomorrow afternoon, with coverage starting at 5.30 on Sky Sports.
