Ireland take on USA and Japan this summer in the June international window.
Schmidt will be without a large portion of his squad with a number of Irish internationals expected to be called up to Warren Gatland’s British & Irish Lions squad. As a result, Schmidt now has an excellent opportunity to trial some new combinations.
It’s for this reason in fact that the Ireland boss turned down a role with the British & Irish Lions this summer.
