It’s pretty safe to say Nigel Owens is a bit of a legend.
Nigel Owens is widely regarded as the best referee in the world but the Welshman was on touchline duty last night for Ireland’s game with Australia. Owens, who refereed the Connacht and Cardiff Blues PRO12 game on Friday, was called in as a last minute replacement for the game at the Aviva.
An excellent picture was doing the rounds last night of a young Irish fan posing for a selfie with Owens in the background. The young lads shouted at Owens to give them a wave and he responded brilliantly.
“You seen the picture doing social media, have you, with the boys shouting ‘Give us a wave, Nige’, and I give the Vs?” Owens said.
“All in good fun, though, and they all laughed. Good rugby banter and how it should be.”
Excellent banter is right and a bloody brilliant photo. Owens is now trying to contact the young Ulster and Ireland fan who took the picture so he can send him a reward for his photography skills.
I’m trying to get hold of him and will post him my match day ref jersey from the game yesterday for being such a great sport, and the timing of the picture.
If I can find out who he is, I can get jersey sorted and signed to him then.
What an absolute legend. Nigel Owens we salute you.
