Fairytale.
12 years later, same story. That’s what it felt like for the Lions yesterday evening when 37-year-old Morne Steyn came off the bench and stepped up to clinch the series for the Springboks.
The veteran playmaker was wearing the number 10 jersey back in 2009 but it didn’t matter – he still has the final say as South Africa edged past the Lions 19-16 to take the series against the Lions 2-1.
It was another masterclass from the Springboks management team who brought the aging star back into the fold for the tour following a five-year hiatus.
Pollard was struggling from the tee and a cool head was needed – and Steyn was exactly that.
Former Springboks teammate and House of Rugby regular, Schalk Brits, was up in the stands, at Cape Town and told Channel 4 what Stey roared out as he ran down the tunnel and it’s just wonderful.
“When Morné ran through the tunnel, he screamed to us, ‘I’m back baby!’
“Seeing him afterwards, he said, ‘I can’t believe it. It’s like a fairytale. It’s a dream come true’.”
Remarkable stuff.
