Saracens have confirmed that Ireland U20 hooker Tadgh McElroy has joined the Club’s senior academy.
The hooker was dropped from the Ireland U20 squad for the Junior World Championship as he closed in on the move to the European champions. McElroy was originally named in Ireland’s 28-man squad but was removed just before they departed for Georgia.
It is understood he had an offer on the table from Connacht but turned down the opportunity to move to the west of Ireland.
The front-row came through the ranks with Dundalk RFC and starred for the Ireland U20s during the 2017 U20 Six Nations, starting all five games and scoring three tries. He joins the Premiership side from Dublin’s Landsdowne RFC.
McElroy is English-qualified and it remains to be seen whether or not he will switch allegiance. As long as he plays his rugby in England, he will not be eligible for Irish selection.
