IRFU to make complaint to Gardaí over racist abuse of Edwin Edogbo

No place.

The IRFU have issued a strong statement after Munster forward Edwin Edogbo was targeted with racist abuse online following his Ireland debut in the Six Nations.

The 23-year-old made his first appearance in green during Ireland’s win over Italy at the Aviva Stadium, coming off the bench late in the game to a huge reception from the Dublin crowd.

Born in Cork to Nigerian parents, Edogbo’s debut was widely celebrated by supporters both inside the stadium and across social media.

However, the positive moment was overshadowed by a small number of racist comments posted online in response to a social media post celebrating the Munster lock’s first cap.

The IRFU moved quickly to address the issue, confirming that they are working with partners and authorities to deal with the abuse and support those affected.

And they have now confirmed that they have identified several accounts that will now be reported to the Gardaí.

“The IRFU can confirm it has received five case files from its partner Signify,” an IRFU spokesperson told The Echo.

“Three of these appear to have accounts based in Ireland. The IRFU will be making an official complaint to An Garda Síochána in the coming days.

“If any accounts are found to have links to rugby club members, we will not hesitate to take action.

“There is no place for anyone in a rugby club who behaves in this manner.”

Despite the ugly online reaction from a minority, the overwhelming response to his debut has been one of pride and support, with fans welcoming the powerful Munster forward into the international set-up.

The IRFU’s response makes it clear that Irish rugby intends to take a firm stance against any form of racism, while ensuring players like Edogbo are fully supported as they take their first steps on the international stage.
