Ireland could be about to lose one of their biggest stars — and barely anyone is talking about it
No deal.
One of the most important players in Irish rugby remains without a confirmed contract for next season — and it’s starting to raise eyebrows.
While the IRFU have moved quickly in recent weeks to tie down key names like Dan Sheehan, Jamison Gibson-Park, Bundee Aki, and Josh van der Flier, one major figure has yet to put pen to paper.
James Lowe has been a central part of Ireland’s attack for a number of seasons, bringing a unique blend of physicality, skill and edge that few can replicate.
His influence stretches far beyond tries and assists — he’s often the spark that ignites Ireland’s most dangerous moments, and his left boot has proven to be a huge weapon for Ireland.
And yet, as things stand, there has been no official confirmation regarding his future.
Last month, Leo Cullen admitted there is still “uncertainty” surrounding several players, before announcing new deals for Tommy O’Brien, Brian Deeny, Scott Penny, Paddy McCarthy and Jordan Larmour this week.
It’s a situation that feels unusual given how proactive the IRFU have been in securing the core of the squad.
There are, of course, factors at play. Ireland are well stocked on the wing, with emerging talent also pushing through at the provinces. Rob Baloucoune and Tommy O’Brien both shone in the Six Nations, with Jacob Stockdale also rediscovering his form, and Mack Hansen still to come back from injury.
But this feels different. We’re a year out from the World Cup.
This is not a fringe player or a squad option — this is a proven Test performer, someone who has delivered on the biggest stages and become a fan favourite in the process.
For now, there’s no suggestion that a departure is imminent. But the longer this drags on, the more questions will be asked.
Because losing a player of this calibre wouldn’t just be a surprise — it would be a statement.
