Eddie Jones Has A Radical Idea For Selecting The British & Irish Lions Captain

Why have just one captain when you can have four?

Eddie Jones has an idea for Warren Gatland as he gets set to name his British & Irish Lions squad on April 19th. Much has been said about who will captain the side, with as many as six players in the running for the prestigious role.

Gatland has said time and time again that he will first pick his squad, and then decided on a captain. He’s also made it clear that the captain is not guaranteed to start the Tests as the form player will always start in each position.

Eddie Jones has made a suggestion takes all that in and comes up with a solution. The England boss told the BBC that Gatland should take the captains of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and form a leadership group.

Dylan Hartley, Rory Best, Greig Laidlaw and Alun Wyn-Jones could all end up being a part of Gatland’s squad.

I would take those four captains and make that the leadership group. Then after the warm-up games, whoever was the leading player I would make captain for the first Test.
You look at the last Lions tour and Sam Warburton captained the first two and Alun Wyn Jones captained the third, so I think you can separate it.
It would be different but I would reckon you would get a great result, with those four captains running the team for you and making sure they set the standards on and off the field.

Not a bad idea. It’s fair to say that good side’s have more than one leader in their squad and this latest suggestion makes a whole lot of sense.
