It’s official. Dylan Hartley is still the England captain.
The Northampton hooker is currently serving a six-week suspension as a result of the red card he received for a swinging arm challenge on Leinster’s Sean O’Brien last month, but will be available in time for England’s opener with France.
In the weeks that have followed since the incident, much has been said about whether or not he should retain the captaincy, and whether or not Jones will retain him as captain. When Jones announced his team on Friday there was no mention, once again casting doubt.
Jones however showed up to today’s Six Nations launch with Hartley as captain and gave him his full backing as England look to defend their Grand Slam and continue their unbeaten run under the duo.
In typical Jones fashion however, he couldn’t resist a cheeky pop at Hartley. The hooker was first asked if he was ready, considering it’s been nine weeks sine he last played.
Hartley: “I’m confident, I feel fresh, fit and focused.”
He was then asked if he ever had to do this kind of thing before- have a period off and come straight back in. Jones then stepped in and answered the question on behalf of his captain.
Jones: “He’s had 60 weeks off mate, he’s an expert at it!”
Brilliant from the England boss.
