It emerged this week that former Springbok captain Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus has been in contact with Munster officials about the vacant Director of Rugby role. Erasmus won 36 caps for South Africa between 1997 and 2001 and was linked with the vacant head coach job with the Springboks, before pulling out of the race, with Allister Coetzee set to take over from Heyneke van der Merwe.
Erasmus was also the first head coach of the newly created Cheetahs in 2006, and has been the South African rugby’s general manager of high performance – a post he has held since early 2015. Erasmus announced in March that he was leaving the role because he was fed up of the politics in South African rugby, and wants to pursue a coaching career outside of his homeland.
Quoted in the Irish Independent, Stander sounded positive regarding the possibility of Erasmus being awarded the role.
I know Johan, yeah, I worked with him a few times. He’s a good guy, he has played for the Springboks. He is a good coach, he will bring something different whatever happens.
He worked with the Cheetahs, he will bring a type of game that is a bit more open. He has always got something up his sleeve, so it will be interesting to see what happens if he signs and what he can bring.
