Dan Lydiate has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in Wales’ final November fixture against South Africa.

Following consultation it has been confirmed that surgery is required, as a result of which he will not play again until next season.

Lydiate is therefore expected to miss the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand next year. The 28-year-old appeared in all three Tests in Australia back in 2013, starting twice.

The back-row injured his knee in Wales’ final game of the Autumn series against the Springboks and has been waiting to see the full extent of the problem. Lydiate appeared to jar his knee in the encounter and was taken off on a stretcher at half-time.

His injury comes as a huge blow to the Osprey’s and Wales ahead of their Champions Cup games and Six Nations campaign respectively.
