The Kiwi had another year to run on the contract he signed in 2015, but has come to an agreement with Connacht to leave and has described the decision as “one of the most difficult I’ve had to make in my life”.
His departure has come as a big shock to the province, however. Aviva Premiership strugglers Bristol confirmed the news of Lams shock impending arrival on their official Twitter account.
“We’re delighted to confirm Pat Lam will join #BristolRugby as Head Coach in June ahead of the 2017/18 campaign,” tweeted the official Bristol rugby account.
On his new role with Bristol, Lam said:
“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach and lead Bristol – a proud club with history, tradition and a bright future ahead.
“I’m committed to Bristol irrespective as to what happens in the short-term – everything is in place for the club to be a force.”
Lam stressed it was a difficult decision to make.
“This has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make in my life as Connacht and Galway is such a special place for myself and my family…Rugby should never be about the individual as players and coaches will always come and go. We have worked hard to have the structures and systems in place to ensure the future success of the province for our community.” Lam said.
Connacht have already begun their search for a new coach.
