A severe shoulder injury is likely to bring an abrupt end to the season for rising All Blacks star Jordie Barrett.
The talented young star has enjoyed a breakout season for both club and country, starting against the Lions in the third Test last month. He picked up a shoulder injury in the Hurricanes’ Super Rugby semi-final against the Lions a couple of weeks back and is yet to recover.
He’s currently undergoing further scans, but surgery may be his only option.
“If it’s an operation it will knock him out for the rest of the year,” All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said.
“While it’s disappointing for him… it’s been a massive year for him. He’s done magnificently well in the Hurricanes environment. He’s come in and had a couple of Test matches and started a pretty big one and has done himself proud.”
The All Blacks play their first match in the competition against Australia in Sydney on August 19.
Update: Barrett ruled out for the rest of the season due to surgery. David Havili replaces him in the All Blacks squad.
