Another Potential British & Irish Lions ‘Wildcard’ Has Emerged

Earlier this month it was revealed that Danny Cipriani could end up being a wildcard pick on next summer’s British & Irish Lions tour.

The Wasps playmaker has been unable to play his way into Eddie Jones’ plans with England, but Warren Gatland has revealed that he has indeed spoken to the former Sale man about a potential spot on the plane.

Jones has preferred the likes of George Ford, Owen Farrell and Henry Slade to Cipriani since he took over the reigns at England, but Gatland has refused to shut the door on the playmaker making his squad.

It wouldn’t be the first time a player was brought on a Lions tour, despite not being involved in the international set-up, with Gatland saying Cipriani is not the only one being considered.

I’ve spoken to Cipriani,” Gatland said.

“I coached him as a kid. He’s not everyone’s flavour of the month but he has some talent and ability. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t discuss him.

We went through the squad and there are two or three not involved in their international squads that we discussed.

“We haven’t ruled anyone out. Some guys may not fit certain plans or frameworks because their personality’s not right, but that doesn’t mean we won’t consider them.”

abendanon

Following another stand-out performance over the weekend against Ulster, Nick Abendanon has been touted as one of those other possible wildcards. The former European Player of the Year has been in sublime form once again for the French giants this season, grabbing two tries against the Irish province on Sunday.

Should Abendanon be considered for New Zealand?
