Picking The Ireland Team For Their Third & Final Test With The Wallabies

Series decider.

Ireland and the Wallabies will clash one last time this weekend with their summer series on the line. Michael Cheika’s side came out on top with a nine-point win in the first Test, before Joe Schmidt’s side tied the series with a 26-21 win on Saturday.

Cheika fielded the same starting line-up for both Tests, while the Ireland head coach has gone with two completely different line-ups. Week one saw a number of his star players rested, before the likes of Johnny Sexton and Tadhg Furlong returned this past weekend with a bang.

This weekend however, we don’t expect Schmidt to change things too much. He will likely continue the trend of rotating a few players – both in the starting line-up and on the bench, but it won’t be anything too drastic.

Jacob Stockdale will likely come back into the starting XV, regardless of try-scorer Andrew Conway’s fitness. But the Munster man may be afforded a spot on the bench ahead of Jordan Larmour if he hits hits markers this week. Conway’s aerial threat is a weapon Schmidt may choose to unload in the second-half to combat Israel Folau.

Cian Healy meanwhile, looks set to miss out through an AC injury picked up in the second Test, with Jack McGrath in line to come back in at loosehead. Andrew Porter has experience playing on both sides of the scrum, but we still reckon Dave Kilcoyne will be brought in as a replacement, while Porter once again covers Furlong.

Dan Leavy also came off injured on Saturday with a “whack on the sternum” according to Schmidt. The Ireland boss said he could have played on, so chances are he will start this weekend, with Jordi Murphy once again providing cover across the back-row on the bench.

Schmidt also has a huge selection dilemma in the engine room that is the second-row. Ireland currently have four very good locks in Iain Henderson, James Ryan, Devin Toner and Tadhg Beirne. But based on Saturday – it will be Toner and Ryan starting with Beirne and Henderson battling for a spot on the bench. While both are also back-row options, Beirne’s versatility might edge it for him, with the Munster-bound star equally comfortable at 6 or 8 as well as lock.
