It was reported earlier in the week that Sonny Bill Williams had agreed a deal to join French giants Toulon in the Summer.
The New Zealander is currently playing sevens for the national side in a bid to win an Olympic gold medal this summer, but was always expected to return to the fifteen a side format of the game.
Highly respected journalist Gavin Mortimer has reported this morning that while the deal with Toulon is expected to go through, it will be as brief as his sevens stint. Williams is said to have requested a clause in his contract that allows him to leave to play for the All Blacks when the Lions come to town in 2017.
To make matters even more confusing However, Gregor Paul writing in the New Zealand Herald, has suggested that Sonny Bill will snub a move to Toulon, claiming that the centre has ‘been elevated to the All Blacks leadership group on the basis he will commit to the national team once his obligations to sevens end in mid-August’
We’ll just have to wait and hear from the man himself as this story develops.
