Premiership champions Saracens are “brink of relegation” as their disastrous season gets set to go from bad to worse.
The three-time European champions were hit with a massive fine in excess of £5 million pounds and a 35 point deduction at the beginning of the season following an investigation into salary cap breaches over the last three seasons.
They currently sit on minus seven points at the foot of the Premiership table, but according to RugbyPass, they could be relegated at the end of the current campaign no matter where they finish as they are set to break the salary cap again this season.
The report states that Saracens are resigned to being relegated automatically as they have been unable to bring the club under the salary cap, with the club said to be around £600k over budget.
Saracens players are being called to an official meeting on Friday where club officials will brief them on the situation that faces them. Player agents are said to be scrambling to secure their futures, with many of their top stars holding relegation release clauses in their contracts.
We’ll have more on this sensational story as it develops.
