Ireland got their Rugby World Cup campaign off to the perfect start earlier today, scoring 12 tries in an 82-8 win over Romania in their opening fixture.
The men in green were expected to get the job done with relative ease against minnows Romania, but it’s still as good a start as head coach Andy Farrell could have hoped for as his side looks to build momentum ahead of Tonga next week.
Captain Johnny Sexton made his return after nearly six months out of action, scoring two tries in an excellent performance. He got around 65 minutes under his belt with no issues, and Irish fans will be relieved their star man is back and in form.
But they did have a bit of a scary moment just on the stroke of half-time as Sexton scored his first try under the posts, and was hit late by one of the Georgian players. He immediately held his wrist and seemed to be in some discomfort – but thankfully he came back out in the second half with no issues.

Peter O’Mahony though, made sure his feelings were known to referee Nika Amashukeli…
“It’s just fucking silly.” O’Mahony said.
To which the referee replied conscious of people listening on the ref mic:
“Please don’t use that language.”
Jokes aside, O’Mahony was one of Ireland’s top performers, scoring two tries himself in a man-of-the-match performance.
Bundee Aki was also incredible, getting a 9 in our player ratings, and could easily have won MOTM too, but overall an excellent day out for Ireland and a perfect start, all things considered.
