Misinterpreted.
A clip has emerged online that allegedly shows the ‘racial slur’ incident that Tom Curry referred to in England’s Rugby World Cup semi-final defeat to South Africa on Saturday night.
Curry’s conversation with referee Ben O’Keefe was picked up by his microphone, with the flanker claiming that Boks hooker Bongi Mbonambi called him a“white c*nt” during the game.
World Rugby have since released a statement to confirm they are investigating the incident with reports also claiming that England have lodged an official complaint.
But a clip doing the rounds now on social media seems to back up claims being made by a lot of South Africans that Mbonambi was speaking in Afrikaans and Curry picked up what he said wrong.
Some people are suggesting ‘wyd kant’ (wide side). Also entirely plausible.
Even taking the linguistics out of it. The repetition and tone make it pretty clear, to me at least, that this is a call to his teammates – not an insult directed at Curry.
