The moment that changed everything for Bundee Aki — and why it still matters now

What a journey.

Bundee Aki’s recent decision to sign on for one final year with Irish Rugby feels like a big one.

At 35, he remains one of Ireland’s most important players, still bringing the same edge, power and emotion that have made him such a huge figure for both club and country.

But when you look at where he is now, it’s easy to forget just how close his rugby story came to taking a completely different turn.

Long before he became a Test Lion, a Connacht icon and one of Ireland’s most influential backs, Aki had walked away from the game altogether.

As a young prospect in New Zealand, he had plenty of promise, but frustration with rugby in his late teens saw him quit. Instead, he took a job working as a bank teller, focusing on providing for his daughter, with a second child on the way.

It could easily have ended there.

But then Tana Umaga walked through the door.

The legendary All Black, who was coaching Counties Manukau at the time, spotted something in Aki and convinced him to give rugby another shot. By that stage, Aki was carrying extra weight and was a long way from the player the rugby world knows today, but Umaga believed there was still something there worth fighting for.

That proved to be the sliding doors moment.

Aki rebuilt himself at Counties Manukau and spent four years making a name for himself in the NPC before earning a shot with the Chiefs in Super Rugby. Two impressive seasons later, Pat Lam came calling, selling him the move to Connacht.

The rest is Irish rugby history.

Aki became a central figure in Connacht’s famous Pro12-winning side and, after qualifying for Ireland, quickly grew into one of the team’s most trusted performers.

So this latest extension is about more than just another season.

It is a reminder of how unlikely the whole journey really was.

From bank teller to one of the most important players in Irish rugby, Aki’s story remains one of the best around — and now there is still one more chapter to come.
