IN CASE YOU missed it, Munster signed a new South African by the name of Jean Deysel as short term injury cover just over two weeks ago. The South African international has experience in abundance and based on Rassie’s previous signings (Jaco Taute, Rhys Marshall, Jean eile) there was probably good reason to have high hopes this time too.
However, if the first half performance of Mr Deysel against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday evening is anything to go by, we are in for a particularly special treat this time around…
Minute 1′
Munster get their first maul of the game set but a few of the Glasgow lads made nuisances of themselves, denying Munster any great forward momentum. Big Jean has the power to change this.
The Bok blindside rejoins from the back of the maul and drives his new teammates five yards up the park. Easy.
Minute 3′
Deysel gets his hands on the ball for the first time a couple of minutes later and all hell breaks loose. Alex Dunbar was the first to say hello to the new man and inevitably also became the first to say hello to the turf. At such a point TG4 started making funny CJ Stander comparisons. Or at least so we think.
Minute 5′
Deysel starts motoring forward again in the fifth minute, using Alex Dunbar as a speed bump once more. In the end it took three Glaswegians to stop the South African steam engine, but not before he made a number of metres in the build-up to Munster’s try.
Minute 9′
With just over eight minutes gone, he then took his opportunity to show the Cork crowd that he can cause likewise damage whilst going backwards.
Minute 14′
And to cap it all off we were treated to some variety as Deysel was the first to react when a Glasgow player became momentarily isolated on the deck. The superhuman got his hands on the ball and well he was never going to be moved from there.
Deysel came off just minutes after halftime, looking a little worse for wear after a thunderous beginning to the game. Rusty? Maybe. But give this man a ball and he will serve up dominant contact for Munster whenever called upon.
Give this man time, and he could yet be a vital part of Munster’s Champions Cup effort.
