Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi has slammed England’s Tom Curry following his controversial claims that the South Africa used a racial slur against him during their Rugby World Cup semi-final clash.
World Rugby cleared Mbonambi to feature in the World Cup final against New Zealand, stating there was ‘insufficient evidence’ that he used the term “white c*unt” on Curry after the English forward complained to the referee.
Mbonambi believes Curry was “unprofessional” and backed up claims from many South Africans that it was a complete misunderstanding from the Englishman, as he was speaking Afrikaans.
The hooker says he is glad the situation was “well taken care of” by World Rugby.
“I think it is a very sad thing when you live in a first world country [England], you think the rest of the world speaks English,” Mbonambi told BBC Sport Africa.
“It was unprofessional on their part. They could have gone on a website and looked for an English dictionary and looked for the word in Afrikaans.
“People understood [in South Africa] but obviously their side was misunderstood.
“I’m glad it was well taken care of [by World Rugby] and that is all in the past now.
“But I have never racially swore at him.”
