Madness.
Tackle technique and discipline has once again come under the spotlight in the Gallagher Premiership this afternoon following a bizarre involving Sale Sharks centre Manu Tuilagi and Tommasso Allan of Harlequins.
With just over 55 minutes on the clock and Sale leading Quins 19-11, Allan looked to gather a kick when he ultimately knocked on, before being almost decapitated by Tuilagi, and being seriously injured in the process.
But referee Wayne Barnes and the TMO deemed that there was no foul play deeming, despite Tuilagi not appearing to wrap in any way, and making direct contact with Allan’s head.
“I don’t see any foul play there,” Barnes said.
Ben Kay rightfully pointed out that there is “no wrap though” – but Ugo Monye followed up by branding it as nothing more than a “rugby incident.”
Barnes went on to award a scrum to Sale for Allan’s knock-on, while the Italian international was stretchered off the pitch with a serious head injury.
No wrap.
Direct contact to the head.
Allan seriously injured.
Tuilagi escapes punishment.
I really fail to understand how this is deemed a “rugby collision.” 🤷🏻♂️ pic.twitter.com/z0P0u5Jyn1
