You just couldn’t make this up.
Leinster took on Glasgow at the RDS last night in one of the craziest rugby fixtures we’ve ever witnessed. With just 94 seconds left on the clock in Dublin, and Leinster leading 31-30, the power died and the floodlights dropped out, leaving the stadium suddenly drenched in darkness.
The Irish province looked like they were home and dry at one stage before Scottish international Finn Russell came off the bench to inspire a Glasgow revival that put them in front at 30-28 with 10 minutes left to go.
Replacement Joey Carbery then kicked a 75th-minute penalty that proved to be the game-winning score. The best however, was yet to come as the floodlights went with 90 seconds to play, with Glasgow trailing by just one point. The lights eventually returned, but Glasgow couldn’t find a winning score.
Leinster released the following statement after the game. Turns out not only did their main generator go, but the back-up one failed also.
Leinster Rugby wishes to apologise to Glasgow Warriors and everyone that attended Friday evening’s Guinness PRO12 match at the RDS Arena.
The main generator and the back up generator failed, but to their credit the crew here at RDS worked incredibly hard to get one generator back so we could play the final 90 seconds of the match.
Thank you to both sets of supporters for their calm and patience, and to stewards, Gardaí and PRO12 Rugby staff for their cooperation.
Thank you to referee Marius Mitrea and his officials for their patience. Player and supporter safety was absolutely paramount and thankfully all is well.
A full and independent review of the incident will be carried out.
