Top 14 giants Clermont have announced the signing of loosehead prop Loni Uhila.
Uhil ho will join from the Hurricanes at the end of Super Rugby 2017. The 27-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Tongan Bear’, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the option of two further seasons after that.
Uhila impressed for the Hurricanes this season and also with Waikato in the Mitre 10 Cup and is seen as a considerable coup for the French side. Not only is he an imposing figure on the rugby field, but Uhila also took out his first boxing title in 2015’s Fight for Life against “The Brown Buttabean” Dave Letele.
The nickname ‘Tongan Bear’ was given to him by former All Blacks prop Carl Hoeft. Clermont have already signed Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw from Gloucester and Castres wing Remy Grosso ahead of next season.
