Newly elected World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont has suggested the Six Nations move to a later date to accommodate for player fitness.
Beaumont and his vice-chairman, Los Pumas legend Agustín Pichot, were both elected unopposed at a World Rugby Council meeting earlier in the week in Dublin. The 64-year-old has hinted that World Rugby will not stagnate but continue to find ways to improve.
“The game has changed undoubtedly, and you have got to keep moving,” Beaumont told The Times.
“I think you have got to be prepared to look at moving the Six Nations.
“That could well be a solution. Everyone has to take a look at it.”
Despite Six Nations Chief Executive John Feehan’s firm “non-negotiable” stance on not wanting to alter the date of the Northern Hemisphere’s most prestigious tournament, Beaumont believes that this is a discussion that needs to be had.
“I know John [Feehan] will probably be quite reluctant to [move the Six Nations]. It’s a question of compromise.”
