Johnny Sexton, Peter O’Mahony & Andrew Trimble have all been ruled out for the opening round of the Six Nations.
Sexton was unable to recover from his calf problem picked up against Castres in the Champions Cup, but the good news is Schmidt believes he will be ready in time to face Italy next week.
Ulster’s Andrew Trimble picked up a groin problem in training during the week and has been replaced by Keith Earls on the right wing. The injury however, isn’t too severe and he will be monitored during the week. Schmidt maintains he will also be fit in time for the Italy clash.
The bad news however is Peter O’Mahony realistically will not be fit, with Schmidt noting it is ‘highly unlikely’ he will be ready for the Italian game. O’Mahony’s hamstring tear is ‘borderline grade 2’
