We may have seen the last of Chris Ashton in rugby, union that is.
The troubled winger was hit with his latest ban this week after appearing to bit his opponent in an Aviva Premiership game last week. Ashton was given a thirteen week ban after being found guilty of one of two offences.
It’s not the first time the Saracens wing has been banned for an extended period as he suffered another lengthy ban last season, after an eye-gouging incident with Luke Marshall saw him miss ten weeks of action.
Reports are now suggesting that Ashton may be done with rugby union, with a potential return to league on the cards. Ashton played the thirteen man version of the code with Wigan Warriors before he signed for Northampton in 2007 and it now appears his former club are interested in luring him back.
Ashton’s hope of a England call-up are all but over now following his latest misdemeanour, with his reputation in union once again seriously tarnished. A return to league might be his only option.
