Picking A Combined Ireland & Australia XV Ahead Of Their Opening Test

Battle of Brisbane.

Ireland and Australia will go head-to-head tomorrow morning at Suncorp Stadium in the first of a mouth watering three-Test series.

Both sides have named strong teams ahead of the fixture, but Ireland have resisted from going all out in the opening Test, resting the likes of Johnny Sexton, Tadhg Furlong and Dan Leavy.

But ALL players in the two squads considered – what would a combined Australia and Ireland XV look like? Well we’ve decided to have a go and it probably won’t come of too much of a surprise that it’s gone a strong shade of green to it.

Combined Ireland & Australia XV.

15. Israel Folau
He may not be the most popular of guys these days due to his questionable outspoken beliefs, but there’s no doubting his rugby ability. Up there with the best in the world, he gets the nod over Rob Kearney.

14. Keith Earls
Ireland’s unsung hero and one of the most underrated players in world rugby.

13. Garry Ringrose
He may not be playing this weekend, but as far as we’re concerned – he’s Ireland’s best 13 and gets the nod over Kerevi.

12. Kurtley Beale
Robbie Henshaw and Bundee Aki are two outstanding players, but Kurtley Beale is an incredible talent. He can literally create something out of nothing and doesn’t look out of place no matter where he plays.

11. Jacob Stockdale
In his current form there ain’t many teams he wouldn’t get into. Haylett-Petty and Koroibete are quality, but on form we have to go with the Ulsterman.

10. Johnny Sexton
Another guy who’s being rested this weekend, starting on the bench. But is there a better ten in world rugby right now? On form – probably not. And that includes Beauden Barrett.

9. Conor Murray
This is a really close one because Genia is world-class. But Murray just about edges it.

1. Cian Healy
On the bench this weekend after a gruelling season but arguably the form loosehead in Europe this season.

2. Sean Cronin.
Australia are lacking in the hooker department at the moment and Ireland are without captain Rory Best through injury. But if we were to pick the best of the current crop it would have to be Cronin – even though he’s benched this weekend.

3. Tadhg Furlong
Don’t think we really need to explain this one.

4. Adam Coleman
Another very close one between him and Iain Henderson, but the Melbourne Rebels captain just about edges it.

5. James Ryan
Still undefeated in professional rugby the young long will be hoping to continue his meteoric rise this weekend with a win over the Wallabies.

6. David Pocock
Big call leaving Ireland’s captain this weekend out, but Pocock gets the nod at 6 over Peter O’Mahony. He may not have played at Test match since 2016, but we had to find a place for him in our back-row.

7. Michael Hooper
As good as the likes of Dan Leavy and Jordi Murphy have been this season, Hooper is still arguably the world’s best openside and a hell of a captain.

8. CJ Stander
One of Ireland’s most consistent performers. It says a lot when you’re forced to shift Pocock to six because this man cannot be left out of your team.
