Making history.
That is exactly how Ireland spent their Saturday evening in Chicago. For the first time in 29 attempts and after a 111 year wait, the mighty All Blacks have finally been beaten by the fighting Irish.
Joe Schmidt’s men scored five tries on their way to a memorable 40-29 victory that will live long in the memory of Irish hearts and World Rugby itself. To put that into contrast, New Zealand only conceded five tries in the entire Rugby Championship this year, Ireland did it in 80 minutes at Solider Field.
All those heartaches, all those humiliations, finally put to bed thanks to one of the greatest Irish performances we have ever seen. The All Blacks came fighting back with a blitz of tries in the second-half, with many fearing it was going to be 2013 all over again. Ireland hung on however, with Robbie Henshaw sealing the win in the last ten minutes with a fantastic try thanks to a beautiful switch by Jamie Heaslip off the back of a well-worked scrum.
Heaslip and his Leinster teammate Cian Healy looked to have enjoyed the post-game celebrations, with this brilliant picture posted today to the number eight’s Instagram. No doubt those cigars are well-earned.
