O’Connell rejoined the province last July in a part-time advisory role with the Munster Rugby Academy, but is now set to take the next step in what many believe could be a very successful coaching career.
The former Munster captain has previously said he would be keeping his future options open, but supporters will be hoping the first step in his journey to eventually take the reins at Thomond Park.
There has been a lot of talk since his retirement that O’Connell and Ronan O’Gara may eventually form a coaching “dream team” at Munster, at some stage down the line and this latest step will do no harm.
The Limerick native has also spent time with Harlequins and Grenoble in an advisory role.
