The Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards took place last night at the Guinness Storehouse with Pat Lam’s Connacht scooping the Team of the Year award.
Lam was of course delighted with the accolade but couldn’t help but reminisce about a touching moment he shared with the late Anthony Foley at last year’s awards ceremony. The Connacht coach recalled a conversation he had with Foley in 2014 about how he was settling in after a year in Ireland.
Foley asked if Lam he had sampled much Guinness much since his arrival, with Lam replying he hadn’t. Foley’s response was brilliant and spot on if you ask any Irish person.
“You haven’t had Guinness until you’ve had a proper feed… I’ll teach you.” Foley said.
The late captain and head coach told Lam to send him a text the next time they were at an event together and that event was last year’s Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Awards. Foley made room for the Connacht boss at his table and the two had their feed.
“We spent the whole night talking and drinking Guinness,” said Lam.
“It was a great night.”
What happened on that night we’ll never know, but you can be sure Lam grew fond of a pint of the black stuff after a feed with Foley.
