We’ve heard a lot of Nigel Owens stories over the past few days as we say goodbye to an amazing tournament following the 2015 World Cup final.
One story may just have beaten the lot, however, for its equal measures of hilarity and sarcasm.
Wales Online spoke with the Welsh referee today in a wide-ranging interview on subjects such as Owens’ take on the final itself as well as the worldwide reaction to the match, but it is the 44-year-old’s father’s reaction which stands out as the most humorous, and may just go some way to explaining where Owens gets his quick wit from.
“My Dad came on the phone and the first thing he said was ‘How the hell did you miss that forward pass!’
“I replied: ‘I don’t know, I just missed it!’ Then he said well done and what a great game it had been.
“He is my biggest critic at times, but also my proudest supporter.”
