Earlier this week it was reported that the Worcester Warriors were set to offer Manu Tuilagi a three year contract worth a whopping £1.6 million.
This would make the Samoan born England international centre the highest paid player in the history of the Premiership.
While it is unclear whether or not the Warriors have made an official offer for Tuilagi, The Telegraph have reported that the mere rumour has meant that Wasps have dropped out of the race to land the Leicester player.
Leicester of course want to Tuilagi to remain at the club but they are unwilling to to jeopardise the team’s pay structure to keep him, with Richard Cockerill saying,
We have never been of the mindset that we will spend all our money on one player and lose five other really good players. The only way to prise Manu away is to offer obscene amounts of money and that might do it.
Instead, the Tigers appear to be hoping that Tuilagi remains loyal to the club after only featuring in 14 games throughout the last two seasons.
Cockerill told ESPN, ‘I’d like to think people realise the club’s been pretty good to him. I’m comfortable what we’ve done with Manu is the right thing. I think he is too and I’ve every reason to believe he’ll stay at the club’.
We’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from this.
