Skipper.
Ireland boss Andy Farrell was named as British and Irish Lions head coach for their tour of Australia this morning, but the next question is who will he name as his tour captain?
According to bettingsites.co.uk, Owen Farrell leads the running to skipper the Lions when they head down under next year.
Farrell is 5/2 to assume the captaincy and could be the obvious choice given his experience as England captain for the past four years. Wales’ Jac Morgan is the Lions’ next best bet at 5/1 alongside Farrell’s England teammate Maro Itoje (5/1).
The Lions, meanwhile, are the overwhelming 2/7 favourites under Andy Farrell to win the series next year, with Australia priced at 11/4, while Andy is 1/2 to stay on in charge for the Lions’ next tour in 2029.
Neil Roarty, spokesperson for bettingsites.co.uk, said:
“Given Andy Farrell’s appointment as head coach for the Lions’ 2025 tour in Australia, we could see the father-son duo come into fruition down-under should he see his lad Owen a good fit to lead the team on the pitch.
“Owen already has a wealth of experience leading the English rugby union side, and at 5/2 is the best bet to assume the position of Lions’ captain ahead of their tour in Australia next year.
“Should Andy select an alternative, Wales’ Jac Morgan and England’s Maro Itoje are the next contenders at 5/1.”
