Leinster utility back Jordie Barrett has heaped praise on two rising young Irish stars at the eastern province following his arrival to Dublin.
The All Black arrived at Leinster following the Autumn Nations Series having signed a short-term deal with the province until the end of the season.
He’s settled in quickly and has impressed in the Champions Cup and URC. Having played against Ireland for New Zealand during the Autumn, Barrett has now had a chance to play alongside the bulk of that team and has singled out two young stars who he thinks will be big players for Ireland.
Sam Prendergast got his chance against Fiji and Australia, starting at fly-half in both of those games and impressing at fly-half before making the Leinster 10 jersey his own in recent weeks and Barrett is impressed with the youngster.
“Sam is a great young player and he’s got a great skill-set. He’s very aware of his strengths and uses those strengths to his advantage,” Barrett said.
“He’s still young, he’s a kid, all his best years are ahead of him.
“I think Leinster and Ireland are in great hands for a number of years. And look, he’s not going to be perfect every game.
“There’ll be things he’ll do really well and things he’ll get wrong but that’s important for a young 10, just learning through those experiences.
“You can’t become the complete package overnight.
“There’s a number of great young No 10s in Ireland and I know there’s always a search to find a replacement for Johnny [Sexton] who was unbelievable over a number of years but there’s great No 10s all around the country so that’s positive.”
Barrett has also been impressed with Jamie Osborne who he has likened to himself.
“He has come in the Irish squad playing centre, full-back and wing very similar to what I did and, look, he is a great young player and he has a great head on his shoulders too, so he has a very high ceiling,” Barrett added.
“That kid, he is going to be good for a number of years. We all saw what he did on the weekend, he has the complete skill-set, the head, he works very hard and he is a quality player.”
