Joe Schmidt has met with the Lions head coach selection panel.
The Kiwi was one of the leading contenders for the role but has decided to rule himself out of the running in favour of a stay with Ireland.
Schmidt will now take charge of the upcoming November internationals and Six Nations with Ireland before making a long-term decision on his future.
Schmidt cited his family reasons for not taking the role above all else. It’s well documented that his son is currently ill, a situation that may also affect his long-term future with Ireland.
Warren Gatland remains the favourite for the role.
