James Ryan banned following red card against South Africa

Banned.

Ireland lock James Ryan has been handed a suspension following his red card against South Africa at the weekend.

Ryan was given a yellow card by referee Matthew Carley, which was upgraded to a 20-minute red card following a bunker review, for a dangerous clear-out on hooker Malcolm Marx after just 19 minutes.

The Leinster lock appeared before an independent disciplinary committee, where he admitted he had committed an act of foul play worthy of a red card.

The committee deemed the offence to be in the mid-range tier, which carries an entry point of a six-game ban.

However, given his record, the committee reduced the suspension to just three games, with Ryan able to reduce it further to two games if he attends a tackle school course.

“In light of the player accepting the red card, his clean disciplinary record as well as other mitigating factors, they have applied the maximum 50% reduction in sanction, thus reducing the final sanction to three weeks/matches,” the statement read.

The suspension means he will miss Leinster’s URC return against Dragons, as well as their Champions Cup opener with Harlequins on December 6.
